ADU, garage conversion, and remodeling contractor in Long Beach

Long Beach permits its own ADUs through Long Beach Development Services. It is not LADBS, and it is not Los Angeles County. Bungalows, small lots, and a real garage-conversion practice are the work.

We convert garages, build backyard ADUs where the lot allows, and remodel kitchens and baths in Long Beach. Permits are pulled with the city. You get one scope, in writing, before the work starts.

If you are just over the line in Signal Hill, Lakewood, or Seal Beach, say so. Those are different building departments, and we would rather know on the first call.

Long Beach Development Services

Planning and Building & Safety for the City of Long Beach review the ADU. The city has published garage-conversion standards aimed at single-story detached garages. We use the checklist that is current when we submit, not a blog post from two code cycles ago.

The garage door has to go

A conversion that still looks like a garage fails the point. The door opening becomes a finished wall that matches the house, with a real entrance, a bath, and a kitchen or kitchenette. Slab slope and ceiling height get measured first.

The neighborhoods are not the same job

Belmont Shore, Naples, and the coast are tighter and more watched. California Heights, Bixby Knolls, and North Long Beach are a different lot and a different house. Parts of the city sit in the coastal zone. The address tells us which review you are in.

Panels and laterals on older streets

A 1920s bungalow and a 1950s ranch both surprise people at the electrical service. We open that question on the site walk so the scope is not missing the most expensive line item.

Local questions

Does Long Beach make me replace the garage parking?

Rules move, and exemptions depend on transit, the type of conversion, and the city’s current reading of state law. We check the property against the checklist in force. We do not promise a parking answer from a webpage. This is not legal advice.

Can I live in the house during a Long Beach garage conversion?

Usually yes. Expect noise, a driveway full of material, and a few tie-in days for power or water. The main house stays the main house unless we are also remodeling it.

Send it. We’ll tell you which building department has the job and whether the idea fits the lot.
